Last month, the Ride of Silence, took place to honor and pay respect to Iowans injured or killed on public roadways to raise awareness not only of the legal right of bicyclists to share the road with motor vehicles, but also to remind drivers of the presence of bicyclists in hopes of reducing car accidents.
In 2016, there were a number of injuries and fatalities involving bicyclists and motorists in Iowa. Last year alone, nine people lost their lives in bicycle crashes involving a motor vehicle in the state.
In six of the fatal incidents involving a collision with a car or truck, five of the bicyclists were struck from behind and one was believed to be a victim of hit and run. The remaining three fatal collisions had contributing circumstances attributed to the bicyclists.
Already as of June, 2017, there have been numerous injury accidents and one fatality in bicycle accidents involving a motor vehicle in the state. Among the incidents were a hit-from-behind, a cut-off, and even what is believed to be an intentional act of striking a bicyclist which remains under investigation.
