Distracted drivers and pedestrians playing the new Pokemon Go game are fueling public safety fears following a string of mishaps. The popular game lets players capture digital creatures at various locations using their smartphones, but, unfortunately, players sometimes neglect to pay attention to their surroundings resulting in a slew of injury accidents.
Days after the release of the Nintendo game sensation, a New York man crashed into a tree while trying to catch a Pokemon on his phone while driving. A few days later, a young lady on the trail of a Pokemon walked into the path of a motorist.
Monday morning two separate car accidents involving Wisconsin drivers playing the game occurred. A 25- year-old struck a pole in an early morning accident, while a 26-year-old hit a tree hours later setting his car on fire. Fortunately, both drivers only suffered minor injuries.
In a case of ‘caught you red handed’, a Baltimore police officer’s body cam caught a distracted driver crashing into his parked police patrol car as he and other officers stood nearby. When they approached the young driver, he displayed the Pokemon game on his smartphone saying “That’s what I get for playing this dumb game.” Luckily, no one was in the patrol car when the incident occurred and the driver and his passenger were uninjured.
Distracted driving accounts for many injuries and fatalities every year. In 2014, 3,179 people were killed, and 431,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. Distracted driving is any activity that diverts a person’s attention away from driving and can include talking to passengers, eating and drinking to the now prevalent practice of texting or otherwise using a cell phone or smartphone. Because text messaging and smartphone use requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver, it is by far the most alarming distraction.
