A Milwaukee area man previously convicted of drunk driving and operating on a revoked license has turned himself in after fleeing the scene of a fatal Uber crash that killed three women and injured an Uber driver over the weekend. The man apparently struck the Uber vehicle after running a red light early Sunday morning.
Unfortunately, red light runner car accidents cause hundreds of deaths and tens of thousands of injuries every year. In 2014, over 700 people were killed and over 100,000 were injured in crashes involving red light running. Over 50 percent of those hurt are pedestrians, bicyclists and occupants of other vehicles who were struck by red light runners.
Research reveals that those most likely to run red lights are younger, male, less likely to wear seat belts who have poorer driving records. They are three times more likely to have multiple speeding violations and prior alcohol impaired driving convictions. If involved in an accident, they are likely to be speeding and alcohol impaired at the time of the crash.
More details regarding Sunday’s tragic accident are forthcoming. Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
