According to the National Safety Council, an American worker is injured every seven seconds, 12,900 workers per day and 4.7 million a year. More than a quarter of these injuries occur in the first year of employment and workers between the ages of 18 – 34 tend to have a higher rate of accidents whereas those over the age of 55 experience more work-related sprains and strains.
A Traveler’s Insurance 5-year Injury Impact Report found that workplace injuries can occur in any business or occupation. The most common injures are strains, sprains or inflammation from lifting, lowering or carrying something. Slips, trips and falls follow closely at 16 percent, which are particularly prevalent in the construction industry. Motor vehicle accidents are listed among the top five injuries for oil and gas employees.
Overall the cost of injuries to American business, including 10,000 annual fatalities, is about $170 billion, according to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration. The figures underscore the risks workers face on the job everyday across the country.
